Guide to Wyoming’s 11 Ski Resorts

Western Wyoming is well-known for some of the most challenging ski slopes in the country. The state only has 11 publicly available resorts, but even the smallest of them have excellent blue and black slopes to be enjoyed by any level of skier.

The ski season begins in late November and generally continues until the end of March. Some slopes in the Grand Tetons can receive more than 500 inches of snow each year. That snow creates incredible backcountry skiing in the West.

For those who prefer heli-skiing or backcountry skiing, there are many companies that provide that option in the Tetons. The area has plenty of other winter activities like dog sledding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and sleigh rides.

Grand Teton Resorts

The most notable spot to ski in Wyoming is the Grand Teton Mountains, where the state’s 2 most popular resorts can be found. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort has 2,500 acres of skiable terrain and a 4,139-foot vertical drop.

Its 116 runs and impressive backcountry terrain are reached by first taking the 100-person tram. Jackson Hole is well-regarded as being among the most challenging resorts in the country, though half its terrain is ranked green and blue.

Grand Targhee Resort is a family-oriented ski area with a mellow vibe. Although it’s a distance from major towns, there are accommodations, dining, and plenty of activities at the resort. While it only has 5 lifts, they lead to 97 trails on 2,600 skiable acres.

A large beginner section includes the Kids Adventure Zone with runs designed to help skiers and snowboarders of any age improve their skills. The other slopes on the mountain are blue or black, allowing advanced skiers to enjoy their experience without concerns of intersecting with beginner terrain.

The low-key Snow King Mountain Resort is steps from downtown Jackson, Wyoming’s best ski town. The resort has 41 runs on 500 skiable acres. There are ample runs for experts on one side of the mountain, while green and blue slopes are on the other side.

The state’s other resorts are located in all corners of Wyoming and have slopes for all ski abilities. Some are small community resorts and others are larger ski areas with plenty of levels for any type of skier.

Not far from Casper, several hours east of the Tetons, is Hogadon Basin Ski Area, which has an impressive number of challenging runs. It’s located at 8,000 feet above sea level, so skiers should be prepared to experience sudden high winds and potential altitude sickness.

The resort only has 2 lifts that lead to 28 slopes and a terrain park spread across the mountain. Skinning, snowshoeing, and hiking are also available on the mountain.

Wyoming also has 1 private ski area, Brush Creek Ranch. The all-inclusive resort limits the number of skiers and snowboarders on the mountain for an exclusive experience.

For a more affordable option, there are plenty of public ski resorts and plenty of runs for Wyoming skiers to experience. Since Wyoming is the least populated state in the country, skiers can enjoy an escape from the crowds even at the most popular resorts in the state.
