How to Get Around the United States

Always take the scenic road.

The United States is big. Really big and getting around can be difficult. Most people don’t dare dream of visiting all 50 states in one trip because it would take you a long time, be expensive, and is quite an epic adventure. Most Americans haven’t visited all 50 states, let alone road trip through them all.

Car Rentals

That doesn’t mean that people aren’t curious to travel to specific regions and see a few different states on one trip. One of the most popular ways to travel if you want to go the distance is to rent a car. In certain cities, it can be a nightmare to drive, but in other areas, it can be a great way to see more of the landscape.

A car will vary based on type, ranging from small economy automobiles to large SUVs. However, you can find lower and much more expensive rentals. The gas price will depend on what state you are driving through. Places like LA and NY are far more expensive compared to the midwest.

For a more nomadic experience, try renting an RV thru Outdoorsy. This is the top source for renting an RV, travel trailer, camper van, or anything like it. They come with insurance included.

Flights

If you want to travel from one state to the other and the distance is quite large, flying would be the best way to go. Flights can be expensive given the distance traveled, although there are a lot of deals through major airlines that can lower the price.

You’ll find that tourists will visit around the holidays like Christmas and in the summer. The busiest cities, like New York City, tend to have a steady stream of tourism throughout the year, though it does decline after the New Year before revving back up come Memorial Day weekend at the end of May.

Booking your flight early can help you save money, or you may be able to find better deals.

Ride Sharing and Taxis

If you need to get from the hotel to the airport, many hotels have a shuttle that you can book, or you could take a taxi. Taxis can be expensive, but for short rides they are affordable. Uber and Lyft are also widely available with prices that are lower than a taxi.

Many countries around the world utilize Uber and Lyft driver services. Both usually offer better rates than taxi cabs, plus you know how much in advance. America uses Uber and Lyft heavily, as it’s generally always cheaper than a cab. In a new country, it’s often smart to check the local ride-hailing service for pricing, so you can compare it to taxi rates.

Public Transportation

For local travel, some cities have excellent public transportation like a subway, bus, or light rail system that can be the most affordable way to explore a specific city. New York City is known for its subway and it is the best way to travel that won’t break the bank or force you to deal with chaotic traffic.

Trains

If cars aren’t the best for your location, maybe try taking a train. Along the East Coast of the United States, Amtrak is the top way to travel. Since the states are closer together on the east, it can take you less time to take the train than to drive a car.

Most train tickets will cost a few hundred dollars between cities on the East Coast, but you can spend much more if you go further. Short train rides, on the other hand, can be really affordable. You can also take the Amtrak train across the country.

Amtrak’s California Zephyr leads you 2,438 miles between Chicago, Illinois, and Emeryville, California. There are 35 stops along the way, showcasing so much of the country’s great landscapes, including the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

Walking

Walking is another great way to explore a city. In places like San Francisco, walking will be a great exercise because of the hills, while other cities may be relatively flat. Many cities have concentrated tourist areas so you can easily walk and explore the streets.
