Alcohol has been a social lubricant of society for thousands of years in all parts of the world. So it’s no wonder there are countless famous top quotes on drinking.

Distilled from rice, sura was drunk in Indian between 3000 and 2000 B.C. As early as 2700 B.C. the Babylonians were said to have worshipped a wine goddess. Mead was fermented from honey and water in early Greece. By 1700 wine making was popular throughout much of the known world.

Because it’s an international way of life, it’s good to learn how to stay cheers around the world. Add in a few drinking toasts and you’ll be a truly cultured drunkard. Here are some of the all time best drinking quotes, in no particular order:

1. “Alcohol may be man’s worst enemy, but the Bible says love your enemy.” – Frank Sinatra, singer and member of the Rat Pack

(1915-1998) New Jersey-born, Francis Albert Sinatra was the leader of Las Vegas’ Rat Pack and one of the top selling musical artists ever. He sold over 150 million records and “assumed the position of il padrone in Hollywood”

2. “I feel bad for people who don’t drink. When they wake up in the morning, that’s as good as they’re going to feel all day.” – Frank Sinatra

In addition to singing, Ol’ Blue Eyes as a talented producer and actor. He won an Oscar for best supporting actor in From Here to Eternity. And was known for enjoying a fine glass of whiskey!

3. “To alcohol! The cause of – and solution to – all of life’s problems.” – Homer Simpson, cartoon character on The Simpsons

Homer Simpson is the iconic lover of Duff beer, father to Bart, Lisa and Maggie, and husband to Marge. The Simpsons is the longest-running American sitcom with 30 seasons and counting. He’s responsible for countless quotes on drinking beer, because “Homer no function beer well without.”

4. “Twas a woman who drove me to drink. I never had the courtesy to thank her.” – W. C. Fields, American actor. comedian, juggler, and writer

(1880-1946) William Claude Dukenfield was one of America’s best comedians thanks to his perfect timing and off-the-wall personality. His film characters were often big time drinkers, as he was in real life, so the two were usually indiscernible. He once admitted to “studying the bible for loopholes.” Another classic quote of his is: “I cook with wine. Sometimes I even add it to food.”

5. “I know a man who gave up smoking, drinking, sex, and rich food. He was healthy right up to the day he killed himself.” – Johnny Carson, former host of The Tonight Show

(1925-2005) The infamous host of The Tonight Show, Johnny Carson was a late night staple in American living rooms for decades. In his monologues he frequently told interesting drinking stores, sometimes staring his drinking pal Ed McMahon. Episode 7 of Season 16 of The Simpsons, “Mommie Beerest”, was dedicated to Johnny’s memory.

6. “When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.” – Henny Youngman, comedian

(1906-1998) An English-American comedian and musician, Henry “Henny” Youngman was an epic one-liner comic. This was one of his most notable: “Take my wife – please!” Another hilarious and partly true quote of his: “The secret of a happy marriage remains a secret.”

7. “Always do sober what you said you’d do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut.” – Ernest Hemingway, American writer

(1899-1961) Legendary writer, Ernest Miller Hemingway was a notable drinker, as are many great writers. He wrote most his work between the mid 1920s and mid 1950s, winning a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. In total he published seven novels, two non-fiction works, and six short-story collections.

8. “I drink to make other people more interesting.” – Ernest Hemingway

In addition to his writing, Hemingway was a known sportsman and adventurist. He had a love for nature and travel. One of his most famous works, The Old Man and The Sea was written in 1951 in Cuba. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. It was about a fisherman battling a large marlin.

9. “In wine there is wisdom, in beer there is Freedom, and in water there is bacteria.” – Benjamin Franklin – Founding Father of the United States

(1706-1790) Ben Franklin was a famous American polymath, or person whose expertise spans a wide array of subjects. In Colonial America beer and wine were commonly imbibed. And by the looks of this quote, perhaps safer than the water.

10. “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” – Benjamin Franklin

Benjamin held many titles: politician, author, printer, freemason, scientist, humorist, civic activist, diplomat, inventor, statesman, political theorist and postmaster. He is famous for flying his kite-in-a-thunderstorm experiment. He proved that lightning was an electrical discharge. While his kite was not struck, it did pick up ambient electrical charge.
